Story Developments in the Assessment of Biodiversity in Forests in Europe

Three  main messages on future forest biodiversity monitoring in Europe is the outcome of the joint workshop of ICP forests and COST action on assessing biodiversity in forests of Europe, held in Firenze, Italy on 22-24 March 2007

Promoting the integration of biodiversity assessment at all levels of existing monitoring, merging existing national extensive monitoring levels at the European level and adding a new, landscape scale to existing forest biodiversity surveys are the three main messages from the workshop held in Florence, Italy 22-24 March 2007. 54 partcipants from 22 European countries met and discussed the development of indicators for Biodiversity assessments in forests, as European countries will be soon meeting in the next Ministerial Conference for the Protection of Forests in Europe, in Poland .

The objectives of the 2 day workshop were: (1)  to make a scientific review of the existing indicators, select the most reliable methods and the most suitable assessment frequency at each different level (2)  to evaluate the usefulness of each indicator according to criteria set by the main biodiversity related process of  SEBI 2010 (Streamlining European Biodiversity Indicators for the 2010 target, plan for future developments as well as redraft a proposal for future monitoring in Europe
