The European Commission adopted four Biodiversity action plans in 2001 (March 28). These plans are aimed at supporting integration of biodiversity protection into EU policies concerning the policy areas natural resources, agriculture, fisheries and economic development. The main aim is to halt the loss of biodiversity in wildlife, ecosystems, crop varieties, animals and fish. The plans contain an overview of the many actions and steps needed.

The plans are a follow-up to the EU's Biodiversity Strategy adopted in 1998, and implement the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) agreed during the Rio World Summit in 1992. They also are a fundament for the sixth Environmental Action Plan, which sets as target: no further loss of biodiversity by 2010.
